Focus Features has acquired international rights outside of North America to William Oldroyd's highly anticipated mystery drama Eileen, starring Anne Hathaway and Thomasin McKenzie. Universal Pictures International will be handling distribution for Focus, with a planned December 1 release date for the UK and Ireland - the same day Neon will be releasing the film in North America.
Based on the 2015 novel of the same name by Otessa Moshfegh, and adapted for the screen by Moshfegh and Luke Goebel, Eileen tells the story of a young secretary who finds herself intrigued by her new glamorous counselor at work - only to have their friendship take a twisted turn. Shea Whigham, Marin Ireland and Owen Teague also star.
The production is backed by Fifth Season, Likely Story, Omniscient Productions and Oldroyd himself, with additional support from Film4. Oldroyd's feature debut Lady Macbeth earned two Bafta nominations in 2018 and won five Bifas with Florence Pugh taking the title of Best Actress.
The deal between Focus Features and WME Independent was brokered exclusively. When discussing his latest title at Sundance, Oldroyd said: “I love provocation in cinema”.
